In September 1999, the Autonomous Government of Catalonia (Generalitat de Catalunya) decided to boost research, development and innovation activities in the Spanish region of Catalonia through the start-up of several research institutions. Among them, and in the context of the third Research Plan of Catalonia (2001 – 2004), a research center in telecommunication technologies was proposed. The constitution of this center, named Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC) and located in the Barcelona area, was approved by the Generalitat in April 2001.
